A road trip is one of those things that every person should have on their bucket list. It’s just a part of American life, that nagging desire to hit the road and spend a few days and nights in strange places, discovering new things about the places and people you visit — and about yourself in the process.
The Scottish travel writer, novelist, essayist, and poet Robert Louis Stevenson said it best, “I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.” So whether you start a peripatetic life on a motorcycle or in a Chevy Traverse in Indianapolis from blossomchevrolet.com, you know the pleasure and adventure is in the journey, not just the destination.
Here are some of the things you need in preparation for your travels.
A good ride
Let’s say you don’t intend to go traveling via public transport, which isn’t such a bad idea either, you need to make sure your vehicle is up for the job. An old and unreliable beater is not the car for your adventures if you don’t want to spend more time trying to fix it than enjoying your journey. It doesn’t have to be new, but your vehicle should be ready and in good condition. The tires are not old and running out of tread, and you’ve got money for fuel and some extra fluids. The Traverse is a good example, as a crossover SUV will get you to more places than a car regardless of the terrain.
All your needs should fit in a backpack that you can carry around when you leave your vehicle. Food, clothing, a tent and a blanket or sleeping bag, a small first aid kit, the works. It will probably be a little heavy, which leads us to the next requirement.
Don’t go traveling when you feel your body isn’t up for it. You need your strength and stamina. Driving takes a lot out of you when you do it for a long time. Add to that those days when you have to walk, run, climb and everything else you can’t do in a car. If you’re going to a foreign country, get vaccines for common viruses there.
It’s fun to travel. You just have to be ready for it so you’ll have more time to enjoy it.
